This is a fantastic experiment. That said, it can get very expensive so be warned!
It is best to use a brand new boiling tube for this experiment otherwise the mirror formed will have many imperfections to it.
Obviously, the main use for ammoniacal Silver Nitrate is as a test for Ketones; the ketone gets oxidised to the carboxylic acid and the silver complex gets reduced to silver.
Works well as a demo to lower years to show that compounds differ from their constituent elements.
