This reaction is great fun. Go to your local film developing center and ask if they have any collected film canisters. They usually do, unless those pesky Primary Teachers have got there first!
I have used this as a mock ISA for my Year 10’s. We investigated the effect temperature had on the time taken for the Alka-Seltzer tablet to dissolve. This can also be done with Acetic Acid and Bicarbonate of Soda.
Works just as well as a KS 3 practical investigation or as an experiment to see the products of Carbonates with Acids.
