This is a fantastic experiment. I have used it to reinforce a variety of different topics;

My Year 7’s see a demonstration of it during Particle Theory and come up with ideas as to why they use liquid Hydrogen and Liquid Oxygen on the real space shuttle. (Clutching at straws?)

My Year 8’s see a demonstration of it during Elements, mixtures and compounds. They observe the small amounts of water that form in the crisp tube after the launch.

My Year 9’s balance the simple reaction between Hydrogen and Oxygen.

My Year 12 see it to give a better idea of the power of  Hess’s law in the calculation of difficult to measure enthalpy changes of combustion.

If you have any other ideas or comments regarding this reaction please email me and I will add them here.
